Cats Protection is the biggest national cat charity. Our local branch is the Stoke and Newcastle branch. Dealing with stray and needy cats and kittens is the mainstay of their work, then fostering and rehoming them, alongside catching and neutering ferals, helping abandoned animals, running the Lost & Found Register, and of course the other main part of our their work is fundraising. They are totally dependant on charitable donations, from both the public and commerce. The website tells you more and is a good location to look for a new cat or kitten.
